520 _aThe quality and scope of research on minerals has grown enormously since this book was first published, giving rise to a wide variety of literature. This volume, which has been completely rewritten and considerably expanded, incorporates the many advances in knowledge arising from new and improved techniques for investigating minerals. The authors have maintained the general principles for the first edition, summarizing important research results and presenting them in an organized fashion. Since the publication of the first edition, crystal structures have become far better known, and the use of electron-probe microanalysis has led to a greater appreciation of the chemical variations in many of the minerals. Studies of fluid inclusions and of stable isotope ratios have given new data on temperatures of crystallization and genetic sequences. In the paragenesis sections of this new edition, results of ocean floor exploration and deep sea drilling are also taken into account. Volume 5 is split into two parts. This volume, 5B, deals with: Sulphates: Baryte, celestine, gypsum, anhydrite. Carbonates: Calcite, magnesite, rhodochrosite, side rite, smithsonite, aragonite, strontianite, witherite, cerussite, dolomite, ankerite, huntite, nyerereite, malachite and azurite. Phosphates: Apatite, monazite. Halides: Fluorite, halite
