Marie Curie (nee Sklodowska) coined the term radioactivity which describes a property of matter spontaneously emitting high energy radiations (gamma rays) or subatomic particles (alpha and beta). Using radioactivity, Marie and her husband, Pierre Curie discovered two elements viz. Polonium and Radium. Existence of first man made nucleus (artificial radioactivity) was also demonstrated by first daughter of Marie Curie, Irene and her husband Frederic Joliot maintaining the legacy of scientific excellence. The present picture book narrates complete story of these extraordinary luminaries and portrays outstanding contributions of the Curie family members (Pierre, Marie, Irene and Frederic] in the area of science, specifically in physics and chemistry. Their discoveries were awarded with five Nobel Prizes, perhaps the only family in the world to have such an honour.
The journey of Curie family is truly inspiring and full of years and years of focussed and dedicated hard work. Against all odds, how a woman fought for her right in the male dominated scientific world of that era. The story describes passionate love of two scientists and the true patriotism of Marie Curie to serve her adopted nation at war times by designing a mobile X-ray unit and the courage to drive it to battlefield for treatment of wounded soldiers. The story of Marie Curie family is a perfect example of mutual respect, hard work and perseverance, characteristics shared by the family members.
