Dr. Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was born on 12" August 1919 in Ahmedabad to a wealthy family. After completing his Intermediate Science Course from Gujarat College, Ahmedabad, he went to Cambridge University in 1937 to do a Tripos in Natural Sciences. Due to the onset of World War-ll in September 1939, Vikram had to return to India. He joined Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) Bangalore in 1940 with Sir C.V. Raman as his research supervisor. Vikram met Dr. Homi Bhabha at IISc. and both the men shared a marvellous bond. Dr. Sarabhai was appointed Chairman of Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR, then under DAE) by Dr. Bhabha in 1962.<br/>Following the sudden tragic death of Dr. Bhabha in 1966, Dr. Sarabhai stepped into his shoes and continued the legacy to fulfill dreams of Dr. Bhabha. Popularly known as Father of Indian Space Programme, Dr. Sarabhai headed ISRO (Indian Space Research organization) which was part of DAE during his lifetime.<br/>Dr. Sarabhai personally and professionally established around 30 institutions of national importance in a span of about 25 years. He was a scientist par excellence, a successful entrepreneur, an institution builder, an architect of Indian Space Programme, a visionary leader and a promoter of science, technology and arts.<br/>The present picture book gives an insight about his vision, mission, leadership and his style of getting big projects of national importance executed professionally.<br/>Dr. Sarabhai was a strong supporter of self-reliant India, and the picture book is a tribute to this maestro of science and technology on the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. |
